A theoretical tablet application designed to simplify the abundance of Dungeons and Dragons information via intuitive and gamified visuals/interactions.
Roles: Research, Wireframe, Prototyping, Visual Assets
The Problem
Dungeons & Dragons is a very versatile game, but it can be intimidating for new players who must create a
character sheet for the first time and learn to utilize the right statistics and attributes as they begin to play.
Therefore, we believe that creating a guided character creator and statistics guide would allow new players to
approach the game with confidence and allow them to participate in gameplay more quickly.
Research Phase:
I viewed and captured images of multiple video game HUD's and menu layouts to determine which features would best create a user friendly design to the tablet application. I, as well as the rest of the team conducted interviews covering D&D and preference of video game HUD/menu layout.
Planning Phase:
Using the images I gathered and the information gleaned from the interviews I helped to create a feature prioritization matrix. Once the big features were decided we moved on to the prototype phase.
Prototypes
I created Lo-fi mockups of the mobile redesign. Some of those ideas got implemented in the Hi-fi mobile/desktop version, and I also prototyped the desktop navigation and a fly out card.
Challenges Encountered
The team and I had a number of ideas we wanted to implement, and as time passed we had to drop features/ideas in favor of staying to our timetable. I also had trouble animating a certain feature, but was able to create the effect I wanted.
Future Development
Being a hypothetical tablet project and with the limited time, I would like to add more informational resources than what we were able to do. As well as prototype out more visual assets for various classes like the barbarians rage, fighters battlemoves, etc.
